Increased Fuel Consumption

Refer to this guide if you encounter increased fuel consumption in your excavator while the hitch is attached.

Disclaimer:

Safety First!

  • Cease Operation Immediately: If you suspect fuel system leaks or notice any unusual fuel consumption issues, or if your hitch experiences issues locking or securing in place, or securing to attachments, stop using the equipment immediately to avoid potential hazards.

  • Stay Clear of Fuel Lines: Never smoke or use open flames near the fuel system. Avoid working in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. Fuel vapours can be highly flammable and pose serious health risks.

  • Stay Clear of the Hitch: Never stand under or near the hitch or any load being lifted. Falling hitches or loads can cause severe injury or death.

  • Seek Professional Assistance: If you lack the necessary mechanical skills or qualifications, do not attempt to repair the excavator or hitch yourself. Contact your local excavator dealer or AME for professional help.

  • Parts and Repairs: Always use appropriate spare parts to repair your excavator or hitch. Follow your excavator’s operating manual or dealership advice when repairing or replacing excavator components. AME can provide spare parts and repair kits for your hitch. You also have the option to send the hitch or specific components to AME for expert repairs and maintenance. Contact us for more information.

Remember, safety is paramount. Follow Safe Work Australia guidelines and seek professional assistance to prevent accidents and ensure the longevity of your equipment.

  • Fuel leaks not only increase fuel consumption but also pose a safety hazard. Identifying and fixing leaks can prevent fuel wastage and ensure safe operation.

    Visual Inspection

Visually inspect fuel lines, hoses, and connections for signs of leakage.

    Look for Wet Spots

Check for drips or puddles of fuel under the excavator.

    Use a Flashlight

Inspect hard-to-see areas and use a rag to check for dampness.

    Q. Are signs of fuel leakage present?

Yes:  Cease using the excavator, repair or replace the damaged components. This may involve tightening connections, replacing hoses, or sealing cracks. Use appropriate tools and materials for fuel system repairs, or contact your dealer to perform this maintenance.

    No:   Proceed to check filters.

  • Clogged filters restrict the flow of fuel and air to the engine, causing it to work harder and consume more fuel. Ensuring that filters are clean and in good condition helps the engine run efficiently.

Regularly replacing filters ensures that the engine receives clean fuel and air, which is essential for optimal performance and fuel efficiency. Clean filters help the engine run smoothly and consume less fuel.

Inspect filters for signs of clogging or dirt build up

    ·        Fuel filter

    ·        Air filter

    ·        Oil filter

Additionally, listen for unusual engine sounds and observe any performance issues such as rough idling or reduced power.

    Q. Do any filters appear blocked,  have excessive dirt or build up or are otherwise due for maintenance or replacement?

Yes:  Replace the fuel filter, air filter, and oil filter with new ones according to the manufacturer’s recommendations or contact your dealer to perform this maintenance.

    No:   Proceed to engine diagnostics.

  • A full engine diagnostic can reveal underlying issues that may not be immediately visible, such as sensor malfunctions, compression problems, or timing issues. Addressing these problems can restore efficient fuel usage.

Use diagnostic tools to check the engine's performance parameters, such as fuel pressure, compression levels, and electronic control unit (ECU) error codes. We suggest you contact your dealer for your machine to complete this.

    Q. Are engine faults present?

Yes:  Repair fault or contact your dealer.

No:   Contact us or your dealer to discuss further.
