Hitch is not Operating Smoothly

Refer to this guide if you encounter problems with your hitch not operating smoothly or struggling to open and/or close.

Disclaimer:

Safety First!

  • Cease Operation Immediately: If your hitch experiences issues locking or securing in place, stop using the equipment immediately to avoid potential hazards.

  • Stay Clear of the Hitch: Never stand under or near the hitch or any load being lifted. Falling hitches or loads can cause severe injury or death.

  • Seek Professional Assistance: If you lack the necessary mechanical skills or qualifications, do not attempt to repair the excavator or hitch yourself. Contact your local excavator dealer or AME for professional help.

  • Parts and Repairs: Always use appropriate spare parts to repair your excavator or hitch. Follow your excavator’s operating manual or dealership advice when repairing or replacing excavator components. AME can provide spare parts and repair kits for your hitch. You also have the option to send the hitch or specific components to AME for expert repairs and maintenance. Contact us for more information.

Remember, safety is paramount. Follow Safe Work Australia guidelines and seek professional assistance to prevent accidents and ensure the longevity of your equipment.

  • Problems with operational movement in your hitch could likely be caused by insufficient hydraulic fluid pressure or flow. Visually inspect all hydraulic lines, connections, and components for signs of leakage. Look for wet spots, dripping fluid, or puddles beneath the hitch and equipment.

    Q. Is there evidence of a hydraulic leak?

Yes:  Replace any lines (hoses), connections or components causing leaks.

    No:   Proceed to next step.

  • Locate the hydraulic fluid reservoir and check the fluid level using the gauge, dipstick or sight glass (whichever applies - refer to your owner’s manual for more information). Ensure the fluid is within the recommended range.

    Q. Is the fluid within the recommended range?

    Yes:  Proceed to next step.

No:   If the hydraulic fluid level is low, add the appropriate type and amount of hydraulic fluid to the reservoir. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for the correct fluid type and filling procedure.

  • Damaged or blocked hoses and connections can restrict the flow of hydraulic fluid, causing the hitch to struggle. Inspect all hydraulic connections and hoses for cracks, wear, kinks, or blockages. Pay close attention to areas where hoses bend or are subject to movement.

    Q. Is there evidence of kinked, blocked or otherwise damaged hoses, lines or connections?

Yes:  Replace hoses, connections or other components. You can contact our team for replacement parts here.

    No:   Proceed to next step.

  • Check if your excavator is fitted with a pressure limiter, AME recommends allowing full pressure from your machine.

    Q. Is your machine fitted with a pressure limiter?

Yes:  Adjust the settings to full pressure from your machine.

    No:   Proceed to next step.

Check the hydraulic pressure settings using a pressure gauge. Compare the readings with the specifications provided by the excavator manufacturer. Adjust the pressure settings if necessary.

Persistent operational issues may indicate deeper hydraulic problems that require expert diagnosis and repair. Our team can provide specialised support to ensure your equipment is properly maintained and repaired. If these steps aren’t successful contact us here.
